A Conservative Approach to Comprehensive Spine Care
First, you should know that back surgery is not always the answer. Actually, fewer than one-third of Dr. Shah’s patients ever need it.
There are several non-surgical options that may relieve your symptoms and allow your body to heal naturally. Following a thorough evaluation, Dr. Shah may recommend one or more of the following first:
Targeted physical therapy and exercise with a physical therapist to reduce pain and improve mobility
- Physical conditioning
- Strength training
- Stretching
- Proper bending and lifting techniques
Medications to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
- Steroid injections or
- Narcotic pain management
Hot/cold therapy to relieve pain and inflammation of the muscles and joints
Non-conventional options for those seeking more natural alternatives
- Acupuncture
- Massage
- Healthy mind-body balance
ADVANCES IN SURGICAL INNOVATION
Outpatient, Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
For back and neck conditions that do not respond satisfactorily to nonsurgical treatment, minimally invasive spine surgery may be the next step. Compared with conventional “open” surgery, minimally invasive surgery offers many advantages.
First, these techniques only require a very small incision, sometimes as tiny as a half-inch long. This results in less disruption to surrounding tissues and muscles than conventional surgery with longer incisions. Most patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery can go home the same day.
Less is More, when it comes to surgical intervention.
A minimally invasive surgery leads to:
- Less pain
- Decreased risk of complication during and after surgery*
- Lower potential for blood loss
- Less risk for post-surgical infections
- Faster recovery after surgery
- Minimal scarring
*We are proud of the 0% MRSA infection rate we have achieved through strict protocols, management and post-recovery monitoring.
